Development of new Osteopathic Research Center

Although there has been considerable research in many aspects of manual medicine, most have been observational case reports or minimally-controlled clinical trials. Thus, there is a recognized need for scientifically-rigorous studies of most osteopathic manipulative therapies (OMM).
The creation of a national Osteopathic Research Center (ORC) will directly address this need. UNTHSC, with strong clinical and basic science research programs, a new School of Public Health, excellent facilities and faculty expertise and commitment to osteopathic research, has the resources and expertise to support the ORC that are unparalleled among the 19 osteopathic colleges. This existing infrastructure and institutional support place UNTHSC in a strong position to make the ORC a success.
Specific Aims: The following aims will guide the development of the training and research programs of the ORC at UNTHSC:
1) Develop and sustain the infrastructure necessary to support the ORC;
2) Develop and expand existing OMM research training programs;
3) Conduct research to investigate the mechanism of action and clinical efficacy of OMM ; and
4) Facilitate inter-institutional research collaborations.
ORC Organization: An organizational structure to direct the development of programs will be lead by an executive director and administrative core for research, education and biostatistics. Importantly, this leadership will be advised by 1) an External Board of Scientific Councilors including clinicians and scientists from other colleges of osteopathic medicine, and 2) a local Advisory Committee from faculty at UNTHSC.
In addition to numerous ongoing OMM-related basic science and clinical research studies at UNTHSC, two proposed clinical research projects are submitted with this proposal as research prototypes. These include an investigation into the clinical efficacy of OMM in moderately severe osteoarthritis and an investigation into the effect of OMM on outcomes of pregnancy. Both of these studies are for submission to NIH.
Evaluation Mechanism: The progress of the ORC will be evaluated at regular intervals and the success of the ORC will be objectively graded by the extent to which it achieves its specific aims. Recommendations for changes in programs or organization will be reviewed by the two advisory committees. Summary: The proposed infrastructure, and training and research programs are designed to establish an ORC that will remedy the lack of convincing research on the efficacy and mechanisms of OMM. UNTHSC is clearly prepared and committed to leading this important endeavor and assuring a permanence for the ORC.
